At today’s Carbon Removals Expert Group (CREG) meeting of EU policymakers and stakeholders, CMW, together with civil society partners EEB, ECOS and Bellona, highlighted the key changes that are necessary to improve the EU’s draft Delegated Act for carbon farming activities.
Among others, the allied NGOs called for the following:
- Strengthen the Act’s sustainability criteria and include social safeguards
- Do not certify activities that cannot demonstrate additionality
- Calculate the indirect emissions resulting from the displacement of regular land use
- Include provisions to prevent operators from clear-cutting their trees after 40 years
- Introduce a liability mechanism for the rewetting of peatlands
