Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV)

Definition

This acronym refers to the ‘monitoring, reporting and verification’ necessities required to track and authenticate greenhouse gas emissions and reductions.

MRV procedures are a necessary component of carbon markets, as this is the system that attempts to account for whether or not a carbon crediting or carbon removal process is robust, transparent, consistent and accurate.

The measuring techniques used differ from one carbon market discipline to another, and there is a discrepancy in the quality of these approaches. Certainly, it is very difficult to measure the full impact of emissions, which are complex and widespread in the impact that they produce, therefore Carbon Market Watch campaigns for conservative principles to be applied to MRV requirements to ensure that carbon accounting is as faithful as possible to the effects that real world emission interactions have on the atmosphere.
