Greenhouse gas (GHG)

Definition

Examples of greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and are the conduit for causing the greenhouse effect that warms the Earth’s surface, leading to climate change.

Although these greenhouse gases are naturally occurring, their concentrations have increased through human activity in post-industrial times to a level where climate change and planet warming is being experienced at an alarming rate.

Climate science informs us that tackling greenhouse gases is the key to halting climate change, and the standard unit of measurement that quantifies the combined global warming impact of different greenhouse gases combined is carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e or CO2eq).

At Carbon Market Watch we scrutinise the strategies of governments, industries and businesses seeking to solve the climate crisis via market-based solutions.
