Opportunities and challenges for international carbon markets under the Paris Agreement – COP24

EU Pavillion – COP24

Wednesday 5th, 10:00-13:00  – (CMW Session 12:20 – 13:00)

Background:

The proliferation of carbon pricing policies over the past years has also seen a rise in the introduction of carbon markets as a key policy tool to meet NDC commitments. Nevertheless, NDCs, domestic emissions trading systems and offsetting mechanisms are being developed in a heterogeneous manner, reflecting the bottom up nature of the Paris Agreement.

This panel event will discuss opportunities and challenges in designing and harmonizing heterogeneous systems and mechanisms. New research on assessing and comparing emissions trading systems and offsetting mechanisms will be presented and discussed by a panel of business and NGO representatives.

Speakers:

Simon Henry, International Emissions Trading Association

Martin Cames, Öko-Institut

Gilles Dufrasne, Carbon Market Watch

Moderator: Lambert Schneider

The panel discussion will be followed by Q&A with the audience.
