Press release: Call for UN carbon credit mechanism to reject Guatemalan project following allegations of murder and intimidation

Guatemala City -Brussels – In a meeting starting today, the Executive Board of the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) will decide on whether to approve the Santa Rita Hydroelectric plant in Guatemala. The Peoples´Council of Tezulutlán and Carbon Market Watch call on the Board to reject this project because essential community consultation rules have been violated, tragically resulting in the alleged murders and intimidation of the affected community.

Press Release: EDF Trading backs away from Adani’s carbon offsetting coal project

NGOs welcome that EDF Trading, one of the top buyers of carbon credits from carbon offsetting projects, distanced itself from the controversial Adani Mundra CDM coal power project. Following a report commissioned by the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests that found violations and non-compliance with environmental conditions by Adani Group’s Mundra Port, NGOs are now calling on the Indian government to withdraw the CDM approval for the project.

Press Release: New data shows airlines favour industrial gas projects to offset emissions

Last week, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) called on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly to agree on a global carbon offsetting scheme to take effect in 2020. Recent data by the European Commission reveals for the first time the choice of offsets used by airlines during the first compliance period in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). The data shows that in 2012 airlines favoured using offset credits from HFC-23 and N2O industrial gas destruction projects, credits meanwhile banned in the EU ETS. NGOs demand a limited access and strict quality restrictions for any future global offsetting mechanism under ICAO.

Press Release: New offset credit data shows record use of dubious carbon credits; Norway backs away from wind and hydro offset credits

Last week, the European Commission released data about the 2012 use of offset credits in its Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS). A large part of offset credits are from heavily criticised Joint Implementation projects and large-scale power plants under the Clean Development Mechanism. Carbon Market Watch calls for use restrictions of substandard carbon credits. Norway has been the first country to announce transitioning away from wind and hydro projects this year.
