Why the European Parliament failed to reform the EU’s carbon market

In a dramatic turn of events, MEPs have voted against a watered-down compromise that defanged proposed legislation to reform the EU’s carbon market and sent it back to the European Parliament’s environment committee.
On 22 June, parliamentarians will get a second chance to vote on revamping the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), together with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Social Climate Fund.
Hosted by Carbon Market Watch, this press briefing will explain the science and politics behind the reform of the EU ETS. Expert speakers from civil society organisations across Europe will provide insights into what is needed and what went wrong.
