Peter is Professor of international relations at the University of Sussex. He has previously held posts at the University of East Anglia; Oxford University Environmental Change Institute; University of Warwick; Institute of Development Studies, FLACSO Argentina and Climate Action Network Europe in Brussels. He has also worked for NGOs such as Friends of the Earth, is a member of the board of directors of Greenpeace UK, and serves on the advisory board of the Green think-tank Greenhouse. He has worked on issues of environment and development, especially climate change, for 25 years and conducted research and policy work for governments as well as international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the Global Environment Facility and the Inter-American Development Bank. He is co-author of the books Climate Capitalism, Governing Climate Change, Transnational Climate Change Governance and Globalization and the Environment. His current research interests lie in the political economy of climate change, especially in relation to carbon markets, and the political economy of transitions to a lower carbon economy.
